I used to own this book in paperback form and am looking forward to reading it again. It's a quiet, interesting, and entertaining book about a young woman doing something not done by someone her age, in her position or during this time period; starting a church.
But Emily is far from an aggressive, trail-blazing feminist, at least not as we would view one today. She is a young, single woman who loves Jesus and believes He has called her to start a church in this small town. She arrives with nothing more than her suitcase and hardly any money. It is fascinating to watch her improvise and use her ingenuity to start the church and also just to keep herself fed, housed, as well as clean and presentable. Exactly how does one give to the poor or help those in need when your own cupboards are literally bare?
Through it all, she learns the greatest lessons of life and faith (which are unchanging no matter when or where we live): we reap what we sow, with God all things ARE possible and that Jesus truly will never leave or forsake us.
If you are ready to read something inspirational with a dash of humor and a sprinkling of romance, this stand-alone novel is Janette Oke at her best. Great for all ages, although adults will probably get more out of it.
Thank you for reading another of my reviews.

I've been re-reading Janette Oke's books this summer. I loved them as a girl and am happy to find they still are an entertaining and light read. I really liked this one! It's a stand-alone and examines the imagined life of a female missionary church worker. I liked the historical details and the pluckiness of the main character, Emily.

A young, single Christian woman believes God has called her to start a church in a small, country town. She faces many obstacles, including a town that doesn't want her there. Using her ingenuity and hard work to get things done, she also learns just how genuine her faith is and how trustworthy Jesus is.
With a Christian world view and several Bible quotations, this story is suitable for all ages.
Although Book 1 of a series, it is a stand-alone novel.
