The plot summaries of the first 4 novels in the series would be spoilers for anybody who hasn't read them yet. So don't read this book if you haven't already read those books! If you have, you might find at least sections of this book fascinating, as I did. Some more than others. I confess I skimmed the section on Gaelic, as I don't really care about the actual technical meaning; I pick up enough from the context. I was fascinated by Gabaldon's process of researching and writing her books. And I loved her own voice, which comes through loud and clear. She claims she's not Claire, but her voice is very much like Claire's (except she's very clear that she never swears, and Claire swears a lot). This book also explains, as much as she can, where her characters "come from." Interestingly, comments on her novels in reviews show that Brianna is the most problematic character. And Brianna had to exist for purely situational reasons in the beginning. No wonder it takes a long time for Gabaldon to fill her out as a person. That's my spoiler, I guess. I thought I'd pick and choose what I read in this book, but ended up reading it all, except for the Gaelic section. I did pick and choose the order I read it in, however, starting with the plot summaries, the characters, and the genealogical charts. If you're at all interested in writing, and have read the first 4 novels, this will probably appeal to you.
NOT SF/F. Bodice ripper. I am really tired of having stuff like this foisted off on me as SF/F. This should be listed only under "romance novels". Even for a bodice ripper I find this series particularly brainless and unbelievable. I'm sure the author is weeping all the way to the bank. See my comments on the originating novel "Outlander" for a more descriptive comment.
This was helpful, but not as interesting as I had hoped it would be. I liked the Gaelic / English phrase dictionary. Useful for checking on what the characters were really saying. The synopsis could be a spoiler if someone hasn't read the first four novels.
Excellent resource intended for refreshing the memory on what happened in the first 4 books of the Outlander series.
