From ABBY award-winning author David Guterson comes another beautiful novel of humanity, passion, moral honesty and personal discovery. In East of the Mountains, he introduces us to Ben Givens, a 73-year-old retired Seattle heart surgeon. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, and still grieving over the loss of his wife, Ben decides to end his life where it began -- in the picturesque country of the Columbia River Basin. His plan is simple, but it is undermined by a series of life-altering events.

This book deals with some difficult subjects - end of life issues, the importance of place, the kindness and cruelty of humans, and much much more. I would not say I enjoyed the read, but I did find myself contemplating important questions and for me that is one hallmark of a good book.

An evocative tale of a dying man who takes a final hunting trip from Seattle to eastern Washington. Familiarity with the area (and with apples, and bird hunting) is helpful, but not required.
