This is a 1951 film directed by Jean Renoir---the son of a great Impressionist painter.
Shot entirely on location in India, this is a film about India without elephants and tiger hunts.
Guided by Rumer Godden's autobiographical novel, Renoir makes a meditative, almost mystical film without exotic actions and spectacles.
Although it appears like a documentary with intrusive narration, it tells about a teenager's first love, and how her heart was broken when the man she fell in love with was smitten with her best friend instead.

I don't know who wrote the commentary on the back of the DVD case, but I don't think we were watching the same film! It was a long movie about people who didn't know what they wanted in life but would make supposed philosophical statements about why they can't have it any way. In my opinion a waste of time.

Some old movies are real gems but I didn't find this one to be. The scrip and the acting are pretty bad and painful to watch.

This is the first colour film by director Jean Renoir. The visual is good and the story is about the coming of age for a British girl living in India, right next to a river.
