Lars Tobiasson-Svartman is a naval engineer charged with making depth soundings to find a navigable channel in the Stockholm archipelago for the Swedish navy in 1914. He alights on a presumably uninhabited island and discovers a young woman there. Something about her strikes him to the core, and upon returning home and to his wife, feels compelled to return to the island, with tragic consequences.
