Alchemy: the mystical power to alter the natural world; something between magic, art and science. When two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, dabbled in this power to grant their dearest wish, one of them lost an arm and a leg...and the other became nothing but a soul locked into a body of living steel. Now Edward is an agent of the government, a slave of the military-alchemical complex, using his unique powers to obey orders...even to kill. Except his powers aren't unique. The world has been ravaged by the abuse of alchemy. And in pursuit of the ultimate alchemical treasure, the Philosopher's Stone, their enemies are even more ruthless than they are...

In a world of incredible and dangerous magic, two brothers learn the hard way that sometimes getting what you want isn't all it's cracked up to be. A richly illustrated and intricate manga series for die-hard fans of steampunk badassery.

After Bakuman, this is my favorite manga series. the characters are well developed and learn throughout the series. They don't so much learn new moves so much as learning about themselves, their country and truth. Of course, the principle of alchemy is unrealistic, as are some parts of combat (like with Mr Armstrong), but on a whole, things happen in a fairly realistic plausible way: the heroes don't always win every battle, nor do they always save the day. Heroes are flawed also, and make mistakes, suffer guilt and shame, as well as have serious trauma. The depth to the characters, particularly the Elrics, is a wonder to behold considering it is a manga. I had so many emotions and had to think some things through pretty strongly. A few things make this series even better: No harem, minimal fan-service (and not very provocative either), no miraculous power of friendship or hair-growing power-ups. I just loved it and I hope you will too. But be forewarned that it is slightly dark and gruesome at times.

I have never felt so connected to characters before!! I can relate to Ed's feelings, Al's feelings, Winry's feelings, EVERYONE'S feelings! I loved this series, and I also loved the Brotherhood anime series! I have watched it three times now, and I just can't get enough of it! I love the laughs, and I love the seriousness that it has as well! They're making a FMA Live Action, and I cannot wait to go watch that as well! Go and read this series! It'll change your perspective of chemistry forever!

Fun manga series. I enjoy this series because the characters are relatable (losing family/personality quirks) and funny (kitties and anger management-- yay!). All characters (even the bad guys and 3rd party characters) are deserving of your love. It is a very original story but it is also very familiar due to the tie in with magic and religion. I haven't watched the anime yet, but I know that one adaption of it is quite similar to the manga. The only thing I would have done differently with the series is had more Mustang/ Hawkeye action.

One of the best manga series, which is also one of the best anime series to date. Highly recommended for teens who are interested in manga, or want to start reading manga. Great series to start on because of its interesting story, unique setting, and well developed characters.
