Classic detective mystery with Paul Newman as Harper!

Part of Paul Newman's "H" series, which includes "Hud," "The Hustler," "Hombre," and "The Hudsucker Proxy." In fact, Newman had the main character's name changed from Lew Archer to Lew Harper. Based on a Ross Macdonald novel, this mid-60s crime film represents an awkward transition from the hardboiled films of the 40s & 50s ("The Big Sleep," "Kiss me Deadly") to the cynical and ironic neo-noirs of the 70s ("Chinatown," "The Long Goodbye"). Slackly directed and way too long, "Harper" is mostly worthwhile for the fine cast, which features Lauren Bacall (perhaps a homage to the crime films she did with Bogart), Robert Wagner, Shelly Winters, Julie Harris, and Janet Leigh. It's one of the first screenplays for William Goldman, who would go on to write "All the President's Men," "Butch Cassidy," and "The Princess Bride." Followed by a sequel, "The Drowning Pool."

Never mind the 2006 date on the DVD. The film is from 1966, and unlike some classics, this one has definitely aged. As a time capsule of what seemed cool, sexy, and funny in the mid-1960s, fine. But almost half a century later, it now falls very flat indeed.
