A hidden gem. Sophia Coppola doesn't always hit gold but here she's created an imaginative, entertaining, superbly-acted and directed near-masterpiece. Visually she's true to the period, otherwise she's intent on its atmosphere, interaction of her characters and trying to bring the viewer into the feel of Marie Antoinette's life from her childhood in Austria to her bloody end. Kirsten Dunst is outstanding in the lead role. You start out sympathising with her, end up shaking your head at how far she has strayed from her roots and from reality. Those who are unshakeably attached to the myths of life at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, that it was all powdered wigs and Mozart and sooooo much more genteel than today will object to Coppola's portrayal, the music she uses and her determination to remove the varnish from present day illusions of that period. Those who enjoy the art of film-making, it's ability to convey a message without beating you over the head with it, will like this.

First, the music did not fit the movie at all. Second, we could have deleted of all of the scenes that made it pg-13, like the nudity and sexual content. The story had a twist which was a great different approach to the original story.

I personally loved this movie! The historical inaccuracies were minimal, and the acting was great!

I chose to watch this movie because Jamie Dornan is in it and he's playing Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey. I wanted to see how talented he is. The downside was, this movie was so awful and bad that I could only watch the first hour. I wasn't able to even see Jamie's character. There is something about Sophia Coppla's films that are just weird and hard to understand. I say all of you should skip this movie.

I liked it! t was simply done! It stuck with her point of view without all the politics. It showed her desperation to have the heir born in a situation where her husband would not make love to her or any woman. At least he was not with another woman! Finally, she had her children with him & they became happy together. The costumes were great! Strong characters! PG13 with some nudity but overly sexual. No violence in the story.

not great. not a good rendition of the story.

This film by Sofia Coppola has lavish settings, beautiful costumes and is a feast for the eyes. However, there is not much of a story and the film ended without the most crucial part, i.e. the tragic ending for the queen and her husband. Go for it if you just want good eye candy. The rock sound track is also off the mark for this film.
