This book is absolutely terrible. I had to read it for school but if you don't have to read it then I strongly suggest that you don't. It has absolutely no action whatsoever and frankly puts me to sleep. I cannot express in words how bad this books is. It uses archaic words for no apparent reason (and yes, I mean archaic even for the setting) and I honestly have no idea how it got published. There were maybe two or three interesting portions, but each one was under four pages. It's basically a story of how a man messes with an excavation site because he is stubborn. There. I just saved you five+ hours of your life. Now go read a different (and better) book!

For the first two thirds of the book I found this really quite slow and a bit of a struggle to stick with (the only reason I was able to keep going was the fact that it was only a couple of hundred pages long and I felt that I would be giving up too easily if I couldn't finish a book that short). The last third of the book was quite a bit better and more interesting. I intend to read more of Peter Ackroyd's books so I hope that this book is not a sign of things to come or the best of them all.
