The "late-reader problem" gets solved a little too quickly and easily to make the story truly believable, but I don't think most kids will notice or care. This is a good book to assure kids that it's OK to learn at your own pace. I like the classic picture book, Leo the Late Bloomer by Kraus/Aruego better, but this is a good choice, too, for younger kids who feel pressured to read before they are ready.
