Much as I generally adore Mr. Eoin Colfer's works, I cannot quite get there with this one. The idea of course is inventive. Our hero is a star-crossed youth, born in a hot air balloon and destined to change the history of flight... but of course, he must have many adventures on the way. There are flashes of Colfer's lovely ironic humor, but it seems to me his voice is mainly lost here. Maybe it's because the whole thing is just kind of dark, as if Colfer were in a permanent funk while he wrote it. Maybe it's because we know from the start that the bad boy is really a good boy. Maybe it's because this story just could not find a message. Maybe it's because Mr. Colfer's heart is in adult fiction now, but he just hasn't made the transition. Maybe it's because...

This is the kind of book that grips you only with the prospect of seeing the main character get out of his horrible situation. It's the kind of book that makes you feel depressed while you're reading it, but you'll look back a few years later and think, "That really was a good book." Personally, it was a little too sad for me.
