Sivakami, a child bride who is a widow with two young children at eighteen, dutifully follows the customs required of a Brahman, except she insists on a secular education for her son. While her choice ensures that Vairum fulfills his promise in a modernizing India, Sivakami must learn to deal with her son’s rejection of the caste identity that is her mainstay.
