A lovely, if somewhat foreshortened version of Austen's fine novel. The stepsisters do whiff a bit too strongly
of Cinderella (some subtlety would be welcome), but overall, a strong film.

Compared to the 1999 movie version of this book, I thought they did a pretty good job of trying to stick with the basic outline of Jane Austen's original. Excellent actors and I thought they all did a good job of portraying the characters as close to what the book portrays. The few spots where they had to skip or fudge some details, I thought they did a tasteful job of keeping some congruency with the original script within the limits a film brings.

In spite of the pedigree that comes with "Masterpiece Theater" and WGBH credits, and the expectations of quality that these imply, this is a wholly unsatisfying telling of this tale. An engrossing story has been turned into something quite dull and tedious.

I did not like the sudden turn of feelings of Edmund towards Fanny. They seemed unrealistic and entirely too convenient.

This was a very engaging story. I enjoy many work adaptations for Jane Austen..except I have ought with the female actor chosen in this adpatation..those eyebrows were highly distracting. Why didn't they think to dye the actor's eyebrows to match her hair? MESS and FAIL

Jane Austen fans and Billie Piper fans will want to watch this... though I have to say the production is a little lackluster. The foreshortening of the whole bit with the play is a good idea, but I'm not sure if anybody who hasn't read the book will get why Fanny thinks it's such a bad idea to begin with. It's a little too sexed up and Fanny Price's hair is a distracting mess throughout. I was entertained... but only because I love the story to begin with.

I haven't seen the '99 version, but I'll make a point of it because of all the comments... I too felt the Cinderella vibe here. I thought Billie Piper was sweet and very humble as Fanny. Hayley Atwell does nasty convincingly. Not a bad take-in; nothing exceptionally noteworthy to speak of, however.

Watch this version, not the Hollywood one (1999 version). Well done and entertaining. Too bad the lead actress didn't have a better make-up artist and hair stylist. The acting was wonderful and convincing. Worth watching again!
