It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Cephallonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious but far from fanatical soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilised, humorous - and a consumate musician.

When the local doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé - and members of the underground - go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable. But can this fragile love survive as a war of bestial savagery gets closer and the lines are drawn between invader and defender?

A powerful operatic novel set on a lovely Greek island during WWII. The story is not always an easy read with it's brutal description of war; however, the author's gentle humour prevails throughout and Captain Corelli proves that even in war one can be civilized, charming and ever so much in love.

Love, war, and now add Italians and Germans, makes for one twisted story on this Greek island during WWII. Madras and Pelagia are engaged, but there is a long road ahead of them if they are to make it. Antonio makes an interesting love triangle with his mandolin. Plus follow Carlos struggle as he fights on two fronts to work out his feelings for his affections. Now the Germans take over the Greeks or will there be freedom for them? Rough read, but not as corny as the movie.

It is a great book: funny, intelligent, wise, and at times utterly sad. The language is poetic and very beautiful. Recommend to everyone!

The kitschy ending is unworthy of this otherwise well researched and well written historical novel.

Justr about the perfect love-story. Humorous, tragic, immensely human. Strangley, I have not enjoyed othr works by de Bernieres, but I love this! Do NOT watch the movie!

An epic love story. And a war story. But above all, a human story. The movie doesn't come close to doing it justice.

This is almost my favorite book. It's a happy romance and extremely well written.
