Very interesting book. At the end you are still not sure what is real and what is not....

This was an above-average read up to about the last 30 pages. It then changed completely, in tone and content, as if it had been written by another author. Disappointing ending, which always sours a good read.

My latest read, it seems I am on a Mc Mahon kick here. I just placed a hold on 2 more books of hers. This one, like all the others, is about a child who believes there is a magical fairy kingdom near her home. She hopes to meet the King of the Fairies, and so disappears for 15 years. Her brother meets a lovely lady, Phoebe who has had an awful childhood, raised by an alcoholic mother. They meet and Sam and his mom seem totally normal people. Mom even serves tofu dinners and dresses like Beavers mom did. Years ago Sam promises his first born child to the King of the Fairy's who he doesn't believe in the first place. When Phoebe gets pregnant things turn into a nightmare that the reader is inclded in. One of Ms Mahon's best books, a very good read.

Very creepy, like a twisted fairy tale/mystery for adults. Suspenseful and keeps you thinking about the book and characters long after you've finished it.

I was captivated from the very beginning. McMahon's child characters are just as interesting and complex as her adult characters. Genuinely creepy from start to finish! I didn't want to put it down, and now I want to read it again with the benefit of knowing the ending.
