Great film Amazing performances by all

It's a shame that these people who aspired to do great things were treated like dogs (actually worse). Excellent performance by Ralph Fiennes in all three generations.

This film was very interesting and often moving, giving a personal face to history and the pressures to conform and survive. In this case the specifics were about a Jewish family, which is particularly moving in the given time era, but the elements are universal. Fiennes, Ehle and Harris are all so good. Agree with other reviewers that it is long and best viewed in two sessions.

Had to split this into two viewings, as it does tend to wear on one. But this epic meditation on the assimilation of the Jews of Hungary in the 20th Century does have its virtues. Fiennes is one of them, who really puts in a tour de force performance. He adopts a completely different manner and physicality to portray these three different characters. Not only that, but the director seems to believe that stripping him naked is an integral part of the story. (No complaints from me). Another is the radiant Jennifer Ehle, who simply has never been given her due in films. You'll find a good look in this movie of what we've missed. Aside from that, great costumes and art direction, a willfully repetitious plotline, beautiful music, and a bit too many polemics. And William Hurt as a Jew? (Oy! In whose universe)?

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It was released in 1999 when I first saw it and remains clear and constant in my memory. Hungarian director Istvan Szabo's "Sunshine" has the heft and scope of such movies as Visconti's ''Leopard'' and Bertolucci's ''1900'' epics. "Sunshine" is a triptych following the lives of a Budapest Hungarian Jewish family at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ralph Fiennes plays the lead in the portrayal of successive family generations and I think it's one of his best roles. The title is the English form of the family name "Sonnenschein" and the name of the liqueur which made the family fortune. There are a lot of flaws in this movie, but it lives in my memory clearly and deeply as works of art do which transcend temporal experience to create a truer reality in fiction.

Marvellous BBC production. Ralph Fiennes plays male lead for three generations. Also stars Rosemary Harris and her daughter Jennifer Ehle..great.Historical treatment is a la Dr. Zhivago etc. I bought this DVD to own.( $60 if you find new)

Tedious, preachy soap opera masquerades as a Holocaust reconciliation narrative & wastes powerhouse cast.
