This was an excellent spy novel from beginning to end. Unlike others I've read, the ending does not fizzle or disappoint. It just leaves you wanting more from this author.

I wanted to like this novel, but even for a spy novel, it has far too many coincidences that don't add up. A gorgeous young actress shows up at a book launch by the middle-aged main character (Sam), falls in bed with him within 5, I repeat, 5 minutes , and then gives him explosive, priceless Cold War secrets. Really? Really? And then as Sam explores some leads, everyone he talks to is killed (he misses being killed by seconds every time), and yet he keeps on exposing others to the same fate without remorse. Good premise, terrible execution.

Reminicent of le Carré in terms of style and structure but unfortunately lacks the sparkle of his best work. If you like spy stories this one's worth a listen, the reader is very good.
