the mind... how does it work, and why? in writing a book that answers these questions, steven pinker has solved one of mankind's biggest problems: how does one find out how the mind works? chapter 1 basically tells you how the mind works, while chapters 2 to 14 act as a review for chapter 15, which is a test on chapter 1. If you just read chapter 1, and then skip right to the test, you might find that you don't do as well as if you'd read the entire book. i personally was delighted to receive a B+, which meant i got a special phone call from pinker himself. pinker was very gracious, congratulating me on my knowledge of the mind and its workings. before he hung up, he told me to "keep reaching for the stars", a beautiful sentiment from a beautiful man.

Known to his high school classmates as 'Stinker.'

Absolute classic; this is Steven Pinker in his realm of expertise. This book explores quite technical subjects but fortunately is more enjoyable to read than a textbook. Also highly recommended is Pinker's The Blank Slate. Pinker's Better Angels of Our Nature is also an excellent read, although he starts to venture in areas he is less well-versed in...
