" Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet. So begins the story of this exquisite debut novel, about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother's bright blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue-in Marilyn's case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James's case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party. When Lydia's body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together tumbles into chaos, forcing them to confront the long-kept secrets that have been slowly pulling them apart. James, consumed by guilt, sets out on a reckless path that may destroy his marriage. Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined to find a responsible party, no matter what the cost. Lydia's older brother, Nathan, is certain that the neighborhood bad boy Jack is somehow involved. But it's the youngest of the family-Hannah-who observes far more than anyone realizes and who may be the only one who knows the truth about what happened. A profoundly moving story of family, history, and the meaning of home, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, exploring the divisions between cultures and the rifts within a family, and uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another"--

This is a sad story filled with unlikable characters, so why would you want to read this?! Well, hear me out...the writing is great and there is a lot of layers to this story. The couple are mixed race in the 60's/70's, so you get a peek into the subtle and not so subtle realities of racism, especially for the time. There's also lots of family dysfunction going on, and although you may not like it, or them, it feels authentic; but you also getting an understanding of why the family members are behaving the way they are. It also touches on unfulfilled dreams and its effect. And of course there's the mystery. So although I can't say I "enjoyed" this book, it was slowly paced and a little on the heavy side, I did find it quite interesting and well written.

The book is well written and very well done. Others mention the lack of love for the character parents, and I can see that but I don't think that is where the story telling fault falls as that is just part of the who the characters are and how the story tells itself. You might not like them but that is their character's personalities. I find more issue with just sort of a dry and predictable story. I did enjoy the take on the mix race family and what / how normal people might see the world through different generations eyes in this case.

The book was well written, but the characters were so hate-able. Both parents were so unbelievably wrapped up in their own selfish mind that it was infuriating.
Overall, I felt that the book was kind of depressing and hard to get through at times.

There is nothing particularly wrong with the writing but the heavy handedness and the infuriating characters became too much for me after only a few chapters. My heart definitely went out to the children, especially Hannah, who seemed like such a bright little girl. I don't understand how people can live in a house and not talk?
