I've watched Rick Steve's TV shows for quite some time now. Our last trip to Italy, I could not book a local guide in time so I ended up taking this book (borrowed from the library! yay!) and we had a wonderful time with book as our personal guide.

Everything was precise and well described. From which platform to catch the train and access to "fast" entry into historical structures to avoid long lines. I would recommend studying the book well before your trip so you basically know what to look for and how it will help you along the way.
