After being brutally attacked by a bear while exploring the unknown, Hugh must find a way to survive in the icy cold wilderness, set in 1823. Leonardo DiCaprio outdoes himself in this film as he finds a way to make essentially two hours of him stumbling around in the forest seem like an eventful and suspenseful film - even with minimal dialogue. The director also did a phenomenal job at setting the scene and making you feel like you were really experiencing the pain, suffering, and vengeance of the main character. I would rate this movie 4.5/5 stars and recommend it to those who appreciate silent yet moving films. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

oh so slow, had to fast forward several times
if you're interested in knowing about the life of Hugh Glass, I recommend reading the book Revenant a Novel of Revenge by Michael Punke

I tried very hard to find the entertainment value in this flick, but it was impossible. Excruiatingly slow with some of the silliest scene ever committed to the screen. So vastly over-rated that I find it difficult to understand why it was ever nominated for an Oscar.

Overrated and extremely dull. Hollywood has no imagination anymore.

This may be a gruesome movie; but it is extremely well made. Blood, flesh, and guts throughout the cinematography! Not for the idealistic viewer.... But, the story line shows how some indigenous tribes - and some frontiersmen - were despicable people. While others were peaceful and simply trying to make a new life for themselves and their families. Don't watch this if you only like happy endings....

brutality was real...and the scenery was gorgeous. Leanardo was good at grunting and gasping....movie itself was fairly mind-numbing since not much goes on besides violence...

Brutally grim.
If your life is too wonderful, just watch this movie to sober up.
At times, the sheer harshness of everything almost has a sort of beauty.
And the graphic realism of the action sequences is excellent.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: One of the most suspenseful films I have ever seen.

Sexual Content: A brief rape--not graphic at all.

Violence: Brutal and gritty. Not terribly gory but the sheer grittiness will make you cringe. The ending scene is quite gory with two men stabbing, hacking, strangling, and practically mauling each other. The opening scene is violent and the bear scene clocking at 4 minutes is intense and gruesome.

Coarse Language: For a R rated film it is not bad. Has a handful of F bombs.

Hugh Glass: As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You breathe... keep breathing.

Nearly as few dialogue as "Mad Max Fury Road." Tons of excellent quotes at IMDb:
