On a summer day at the arcade, timid sixteen-year-old Ignacio Cañas encounters two charismatic rebels: El Zarco ("Blue Eyes") and his gorgeous girl, Tere. Entranced, he crosses the border into their dangerous world, becoming their partner in crimes that quickly escalate.

Twenty-five years later, Tere materializes in Cañas's office, needing help. Cañas has settled back into middle-class life, becoming a successful defense lawyer. Zarco has matured into a convict of some infamy. Yet somehow, with new stakes, this three-way affair will begin again.

With his usual brio, Javier Cercas surveys the borders between right and wrong, respectability and criminality, and to what extent we can pass between them--or determine on which side we ultimately fall. This brilliantly plotted tale firmly establishes him as one of the most rewarding novelists writing today.

Terrific writing, reminded me of Roberto Bolano's "Savage Detectives."

An engrossing novel about friendships, betrayal, love, loyalty and everything else that gets thrown into the mix of what we know as life. It is translated from Spanish and is set in the years after Franco and the emerging of democracy. It centers around a group of rebel teenage gang members who start on a life of petty crime and progress from there to more serious crime like robbing banks. One of the gang members leaves, returns to school, then uni and eventually becomes a lawyer. The bulk of the story is around his interactions with the gang leader and a girl gang member. After no contact for 30 years the lawyer hears through the girl that the leader is in jail, has been for most of his adult life, and wants his old friend to act as for him in securing an early release. The writing is fluid, evocative and filled with emotion. An absorbing and fulfilling read. It has encouraged and intrigued me enough to read some of his other books.

A compelling story of a teenage delinquent and his followers, relayed in flashback by a follower who went straight and became successful, a police officer and a corrections official. A snapshot in time of Spain in transition after Franco and a tale of morality, poverty and opportunities lost.
