Bernie Manuelito investigates a car bombing at a basketball game. The car belongs to a school alum she remembers who is now mediating a Grand Canyon resort proposal. Good. Enjoy these tales with Bernie, her husband Jim Chee and their mentor Joe Leaphorn.

I enjoyed the first two books in this new series by Anne Hillerman, but this third one was hard to read. Nothing about the story was interesting to me, and there was too much repetition.
Too many pages would go by before something happened, and even then it was never gripping. There was simply too little action in this book, and too much driving for long distances while the main characters tried in vain to contact each other by cell phones that didn't work out in the desert.

Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito are tasked with protecting a mediator whose job is ease relations between parties who do or do not want a resort built in the Grand Canyon. While Anne H. continues in the field of her father - Navajo culture - and does a credible job.

Misogynist fans of Tony Hillerman should just stop reading Anne's books. These are brilliantly written and faithfully follow the characters Tony laid out . However, Anne has moved about half of the perspective to Bernie, and that upsets some people. These are NOT romance books. Traditional Navajo (like Bernie, Leaphorn and Chee) people do not flaunt their sexual desires or discuss private matters--so no groping, no heavy breathing, no throbbing members. Anne is trying to faithfully follow the character of her characters--not turn them into pseudo white people. What one review calls cheesy I find charming and revealing, then then I don't like trashy bodice-ripper tripe.
