NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Discover Captain Phasma's mysterious history in this "Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi " novel.

One of the most cunning and merciless officers of the First Order, Captain Phasma commands the favor of her superiors, the respect of her peers, and the terror of her enemies. But for all her renown, Phasma remains as virtually unknown as the impassive expression on her gleaming chrome helmet. Now, an adversary is bent on unearthing her mysterious origins--and exposing a secret she guards as zealously and ruthlessly as she serves her masters.

Deep inside the Battlecruiser Absolution, a captured Resistance spy endures brutal interrogation at the hands of a crimson-armored stormtrooper--Cardinal. But the information he desires has nothing to do with the Resistance or its covert operations against the First Order.

What the mysterious stormtrooper wants is Phasma's past--and with it whatever long-buried scandal, treachery, or private demons he can wield against the hated rival who threatens his own power and privilege in the ranks of the First Order. His prisoner has what Cardinal so desperately seeks, but she won't surrender it easily. As she wages a painstaking war of wills with her captor, bargaining for her life in exchange for every precious revelation, the spellbinding chronicle of the inscrutable Phasma unfolds. But this knowledge may prove more than just dangerous once Cardinal possesses it--and once his adversary unleashes the full measure of her fury.

The only thing missing was Phasma's perspective.

This is the backstory that I didn't know I needed. I picked this up on a whim and before I knew it I was many chapters in and unable to put it down.

Characters: 3/10
Plot: 7/10
Writing: 8/10

I was so excited when I saw that Phasma was getting her own book. A chance to get to know this really intense figure that we've barely glimpsed in the film--woohoo! But 'twas not to be. This book really dragged for me, and here's why: it was too distant from Phasma's perspective. There was the frame narrative, with the narrator getting tortured (and I didn't really care about either the narrator or the cardinal that much). Then there was the story within the story, which *still* wasn't in Phasma's perspective. I get that it makes Phasma out to be a legend, but it made her really unsympathetic (and even villains should be sympathetic) and distant and cold. I did not look forward to reading this book, even though it had lots of conflict, because I didn't care about the characters whose perspective I was in.

Captain Phasma is one of my favorite Star Wars characters, period. She's mysterious and definitely has a dramatic flair to her wardrobe choices. For me, this book is a must-read for those wanting more of her backstory. She's feisty and smart. Delilah S. Dawson gives us motivation for Phasma and gives us just enough information about her to keep us wanting more. There are also some great cameos and a shocking twist of events that the Captain herself is a major part of.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, picking up this book was a no-brainer for me. Phasma's appearance in "The Force Awakens" was disappointing, given the buzz about her from the trailer, and this book does a good job of building back up that mystique. As the previous reviewer notes, it doesn't help you much with who she is NOW, but it does open out the new Star Wars universe a little. I'd like to read more about Vi and Cardinal, for example.

I find Star Wars novels to be a bit all over the place. The writing quality tends to vary between authors, and, more often than you would think, the stories don't lead anywhere in particular. Phasma does not fall into this category as Delilah S. Dawson delivers a fantastic science fiction novel that begs to be binge read in one sitting. The story is told using a frame narrative in which a resistance spy is captured by a First Order officer named Cardinal (who is appropriately a red stormtrooper) who forces the spy to tell him what she knows about the infamous and mysterious Captain Phasma. The novel answers questions about how Phasma became a member of the First Order and where she got her iconic chrome armor from. My one criticism is that our heroine Phasma remains as much of an enigma as she was during The Force Awakens, and I wish that the story had been told from her POV to get more insight into who she is as a character. My small gripes aside, this is one book you should pick up whether you are a die hard Star Wars fan or not.
