O.K. Here's your review by someone who hasn't read the books. I very much enjoyed this story of the Walker family on vacation, and their "pirate adventures". The adults were truly adjunct to this story of 4 children growing up fast one Summer when they are thrust into predicaments, some of their own making. Beautiful scenery, and fine acting (especially 9-year old Tatty!) help make this an exciting flick that the family will enjoy. It takes place in 1937, and it's hard to believe parents would allow their kids to experience this amount of freedom sailing and exploring an uninhabited island nowadays.

I borrowed the 2016 Swallows and Amazons movie from the library. If you love the S&A books as I do, I don't recommend it. The child actors were excellent, the scenery was gorgeous, and the boats and costumes were perfect, but sadly the writers couldn't resist goosing the plot in stupid ways. I mean, Russian spies? John BREAKING A WINDOW AND NOT 'FESSING UP? Yes, I'm shouting. Nancy Blackett with weirdly blonde hair? Two small dinghies trying to stop a float plane? GUNS???? I'd be interested to hear a review from someone who hasn't read the books. My husband doesn't count because he had to listen to me going "it wasn't like that!" all through the movie. I was not impressed.

Based on the children’s book by Arthur Ransome, Phillipa Lowthorpe’s unabashedly sentimental story, set in 1935, follows the misadventures of four siblings over the course of one magical summer by the lake. The soundtrack gushes, the panoramic scenes of English country life ooze nostalgia, and the Disney-style peril lets you know everything is going to be just super. A quaint little crowd pleaser which provides a welcome counterbalance to some of cinema's darker fare. I’m not ashamed to admit I enjoyed it!

While not quite the high caliber of the book, this is an entertaining remake, containing many original elements plus a spy adventure, set in the stunning Lake district setting. Available on Hoopla.

I loved the book when I was little, and the movie irked me far less than I feared it would.
