This is a story of a complex, talented woman who rose above the conventions and assumptions of her day (1861-1913) and carved her own path.
Pauline Johnson was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and an English gentlewoman who crossed Canada 19 times, visited England 3 times and became an international celebrity reciting her work to thousands of people in hundreds of venues in Canada and England.
Gray's book is a very detailed account of Johnson's life and perhaps the book at almost 440 pages could have been somewhat shorter.
