Once again, Nicholas Sparks has failed to disappoint me. Dear John might just be my favorite Nicholas Sparks book so far. However, I do have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this book as Nicholas Spark's endings never truly satisfy me. The novel is about a rebellious guy, John Tyree, who dropped out of school to enlist in the army. When he comes back to his home, he meets a girl named Savannah who changes his life. Although the two are opposites, they fall in love. Throughout the course of the book, John changes so much, Savannah changed him. The subplot I enjoyed most was the relationship with his father. At first, John resented his quite father who didn't have much money but slowly, Savannah changes their relationship and John forms a close tie with his father.I think I might have enjoyed the growing of the relationship of John and his father more than the one between him and Savannah. The book is titled Dear John because it really is the climax of the story. When 9/11 changes everything, John re-enlists and Savannah heart broken, tries to wait for him to come back. When John receives a letter with two words Dear John, his life is changed forever. Dear John, the letter read... and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. I really loved the character development of this story, love changes John he matures into a wise young man. His experience with Savannah really gives him a new perspective of love, and what it really means to love someone. “I finally understood what true love meant...love meant that you care for another person's happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be.”
