A well written, enjoyable read. Recognizable as a retelling of a fable, but not completely predictable or dull. The main character is known as "the lass" until about the last 10 or so pages. Readers get to know her character as a child and is gifted with the ability to speak with animals. Th the main story line begins when she is a young adult and a white bear is seen in the area. Her brother seeks it, knowing the pelt will bring him money, and fame. Turns out the bear shows up in the family home, and asks The Lass to live with him in a palace for a year. He promises no harm will come to her, and her family will have money. The Lass agrees, if her wolf companion can go with her. Once at the palace The Lass begins to chafe at her lack of understanding the circumstances that keep not only her there, but the ice bear and others trapped in a castle of ice. I only wish the epilogue was an actual chapter, fully written out. The ending felt rushed and short because of it.
