I don’t love WWII fiction. But this book was cliché and kinda cheesy. It’s 500+ pages long because the author recycles the same scenes, dialogue, and descriptions several times, i.e. Isabelle being called and calling herself “impetuous” and the phrase “grabbed her arm so tightly to leave a bruise.” The format, subject matter, and narrative timeline reminded me of Hannah’s “Winter Garden,” which I also had similar issues with.
